Dame's gowns up for auction

THE trademark blue and pink gowns of romantic novelist Dame Barbara Cartland will be auctioned in St Albans at the end of the month.

The St Albans Bereavement Network (SABN) is holding the event to raise funds for its work supporting the district's bereaved.

More than 20 gowns belonging to the campaigner, who spent her life in Hatfield and died aged 98 in 2000, will go under the hammer at Sopwell House Hotel.

They were supplied by friend Paul Lamorbey, of Co-operative Funeralcare, and her daughter Countess Raine Spencer as part of continuing charity work to raise thousands of pounds through the sale of her famous dresses.

Paul will give an insight into why the former Hertfordshire County Councillor picked pick and blue as her top colours and a background of each gown.

Sopwell House Hotel was picked as the apt venue because of the strong friendship between Dame Barbara and the former owner of the manor, Lord Mountbatten of Burma.

A buffet dinner will be provided at the event on Friday April 25. Call the SABN for tickets and more information on 01727 841914.
