Borehamwood man charged with bookie raids
An unemployed Borehamwood man has been charged with carrying out dozens of armed raids at bookies across England.
Nicholas Martin Smith, 58, of Tempsford Avenue, was arrested by the Metropolitan Police's Flying Squad in January.
The robberies, which took place between 2005 and Smith's arrest, sparked a nationwide manhunt, with officers studying CCTV footage from robberies as far afield as Lincolnshire, Hampshire and Suffolk.
At one point seven police forces were searching for the suspect and the case also featured on the BBC's Crimewatch programme.
It emerged today that Smith had appeared at Hendon Magistrates' Court on March 13 charged with five counts of possessing a firearm and five counts of armed robbery in relation to raids at bookies in Hertfordshire.
In total he faces 36 counts of armed robbery and firearm offences at stores across England.
It is thought as much as £30,000 was stolen during the raids.
Smith was remanded in custody and will appear at Harrow Crown Court on May 15.
