Woman battles theatre fire the right way
A QUICK thinking woman stopped a fire spreading around a theatre this morning.
The fire at the Trestle Arts Base in St Albans was started when a lamp, which had been left on all night, overheated and nearby clothing caught alight.
A drama teacher discovered the fire at around 9am when she arrived for work and, after calling the emergency services, battled the flames with a fire extinguisher.
Watch Commander Peter Hatherley, of St Albans Fire Station, said: "Luckily, because the lady acted quickly the fire didn't have a chance to spread and she really minimised the damage to the building.
"She acted in exactly the right manor by calling us first and then using the fire extinguisher because it was safe to."
The building in Russet Drive, a former chapel over 100 years-old, only suffered damage to one shelf.
