Boothroyd "gutted" by play-off exit

Aidy Boothroyd declared himself "gutted" by last night's play-off semi-final defeat but said he had no qualms about the result.

"I thought we played very well," said the manager. "We stuck to the gameplan, played some terrific football but we conceded a poor goal just before half-time.

"We were unfortunate in the end but you reap what you sow. We didn't take our chances and didn't deserve a place in the final or in the Premiership. We are where we are for a reason but I'm gutted for everyone at the club who has worked so hard."

Added Boothroyd: "I'm proud of my players and but for mistakes it could have been a different story.

"Four-one was harsh on us but that happens when you get caught out chasing the game. Credit to Hull, they deserve to go through."

Understatement of the year - Hornets boss Aidy Boothroyd later conceded his side were not good enough over the two legs and looks set for a major overhaul of the squad in the summer. I trust he includes himself?

Difficult not to agree with Aidy's comments and in the final analysis I would include the fans.
The attendance at the home leg was bad, last years cup semi final with all those empty seats spoke volumes and the Play off final in cardiff with a couple of thousand empty seats a further indication of what we deserve

We win together and take the accolades together, therefore when we lose Winston we lose together. The players have not beeb good enough at times, the manager has admitted he made mistakes, I will admit I have not been the best at supporting this season, I could have given more. So we are all at fault, but are you and the other whingers on here prepared to put your hands up and say " I could have done better"...I doubt it

Couldnt agree more then MM and chris. We certainly didnt play good enough football this season and we got found out, however although its taken a little longer then we hoped i think Aidy has realised this and I am looking forward to next season. If however the performances and win ratio is not dramatically improved after 10 to 15 games then we will need to start looking at new options, Aidy does deserve to be given a chance to improve what has happened ...
With regards to posters on this site this is how i see it ..
you have got the hard core fans who give their all at every game they go to but realise that the performances havent been good, but also know that chanting and booing doesnt achieve anything, supporters like VoR, chris, tiger bay boy etc etc etc .. then you have got the Colon McZippy brigade, nothing is ever right even when we win they havent a good word to say, now that is boring, predictable and repetitive. I also dont give a F**k what people like this think about me, the football team or life in general. I would never socialise with people so petty and small minded as that and although they do sometimes have a valid comment they destroy it by being abusive. so give me your worst abuse colun Mczippy because it really hurts my feelings and i really need your aproval to survive in this dark depressing world !!!...
Then you have got Ozzy/slasher who has never posted a comment about anything football related and only posts abuse to what everyone else has to say. that has now got predictable as well, try to come up with something that is insightfull and interesting slashy washy or then again you could come up with some witty put down about spiderman because thats really going to tell me !!!
Looking forward to the banter again next season already.
We may not all agree but the one consistant thing is we all want the best for WFC (well most of us do), all the best and heres to next season ..

Since we now have to look forward a strong response from Aidy is needed to show he means what he says.Previously this season he has talked about the footballing sides being midtable. The main 3 mentioned were WBA,Bristol City and Ipswich. At the end of the season 1 promoted, 1 in the final and 1 just missing the play-offs.
We do not need to become the aristocrats of the division but the players are clearly happier playing "football".
A statement of intent now from Aidy would be to retain as integral players Rinaldi and Williamson. He shpuld then decide on the style of play and forwards to fit it and unload a lot of the current forwards and target any replacements. Kabba is clearly surplus to any of these requirements - though he tries hard he is not Aidy's choice as a winger or centre in front of most others. Ellington he will need to decide about quickly. Hoskins is the interesting one and although I am sure Aidy will let him go this is one that may come back to bite us.
As regards goalkeepers Richard is short of the ability to command his area in the air and has made too many mistakes this year, Blackburn didn't send him back because they were so impressed. However I suspect that Aidy will promote Scott Loach who has looked good the twice I have seen him this season, retain Richard and the American and offload Poom.
I've already got next years' season ticket so have to look forward in hope that Aidy means what he says!

Thank god that’s over. Terrible season. I can’t remember watching a more tactically inept Watford team except perhaps the side that Bassett put together after taking over from Lord Taylor.

Even the Perryman/Lee/Roeder years were more fun and the pitiful standard of football we played back then more understandable because of the largely dismal players at those managers’ disposal.

Give Hoofers till October. If there’s no improvement in playing style/results by then he’s gotta go. And before any numpty bothers to post an imbecilic ‘who are you going to replace him with?’ response, how many of you had actually even heard the name Adrian Boothroyd before he took over from the extremely ill-treated Ray Lew?

The pitiful spin after every god-awful performance; the outright lies regarding the sale of King; the decision to make fans stump up for season tickets for next year with a third of the present season left, have all combined to leave my previously bottomless well of good will towards WFC severely drained. And don’t mention the patronizing jerk on the tannoy at every home game….

Looking forward to the new season already!

By the way, does anyone know what Dave Bassett’s doing now?

Well the manager finally realised that the style of play had to change in the second week in May. Too late im afraid. We played very well last night in the first half but of course the Richard Lee mistake /their goal killed us off. 4-1 was really a flattering scoreline as of course we were so open at the back chasing the game.

What's most frustrating for me is we had so many second chances during the season, as late as the home game against Barnsley - win it and we go top. Im sad that the manager was so stubborn and would n't change the style of play until it was too late.

Anyhow, here's to next season and hopefully a tighter defence and more goals at the right end !

Well it was an interesting season right to the end! Good performance last night and honestly think if not for howler before half time we'd have been level shortly after as they were on the ropes. Nice to see some real football being played, they have proven that they can and so here's to next season playing that way with a few better players and an ability to play our way through bad spells and get promoted...without the pressure of being expected to this time. Come on you 'orns, roll on next season! And by the way CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP!

A good performance on the whole last night bar the obvious glaring errors and proof that we can play football when we want to (which does beg the question why haven't we been?!).

I predict Aidy will still be with us next season. Simpson won't let him go. A new owner might have done but who's going to invest in us at the moment? Aidy won't resign as he has a clear career path and resigning on the back of what he'll see as a failure would do him no good. I think it would be a mistake to lose him anyway.

Time to regroup though.

For my money we need a bit of a cull.

Retain Eustace, McAnuff, Williamson, Ellington, Bromby, Shittu, Smith and Williams as first teamers.

Get rid of Jackson, Poom, Demerit (as much as it pains me to say it), Francis, Henderson, Doyley, Kabba, Priskin, Bangura, Hoskins, Mariappa, Rinaldi (no point if you ain't gonna play him), Ashikodi, Avinel, Aloi (see Rinaldi).

Keep Loach, Lee, Robinson, Parkes, O'Toole, Clarke, Forbes, Campana, Ainsworth and Osborne in reserve. Move Liam Henderson up too.

We need to buy a quality goalkeeper and right back, cover for Bromby and Shittu (assuming he doesn't leave as the rumour mill would suggest), at least two decent midfielders, and a brand new set of strikers.

Aidy also needs a decent scout and assistant manager.

Next season is going to be harder than this. If we don't sort the wheat from the chaff now we'll be nowhere near the play-offs this time next year. No holiday for you yet Aidy!

For a supposed onslaught to the premier league I have to ask why changes weren't made sooner, even if only within the game play. I won't challenge intent or endeavour but good teams have to be able to adjust. The factors that influenced this were all in the manager's control. Our tactics were inept to the purist and ineffective from before Xmas. To employ something different for the play-offs only, is a bit after the event. I'll support the club whatever, but I am very disappointed with how the season's turned out and the manner in which we went about it. I don't believe the board will make managerial changes despite some justification and I therefore wonder if the key is getting a quality no 2 in before anything else. It did seem to start losing its wheels after KB left.

Agree accept that if we are going evolve our style of play I would keepPriskin, Hoskins as in a footballing side they would be completely different players. Hoskins has the potential to be that clever forward we need. Priskin is a very good player, just needs a few people to believe in him. Aloi was always going to be a player for the future, that was never a secret so we should keep him. I believe that Darius has another side to him as well, we played well last night with him dropping off and holding the ball, he is to good let go and would be a great squad player.

You've forgotten Sadler! I know he is easy to forget but would you deal or not deal? Personally, I would not retain Ellington if we could get a decent price for him. Also, I would keep Henderson as a battering ram in the Championship, and I would also keep Demerit who, however bad he was yesterday, has had a raw deal from AB this season. I cannot comment on Hoskins nor Rinaldi because I have not seen enough of them. Priskin, oddly, might have been good in the Premiership but I agree he is surplus in a league where brawn is more important than brain. Otherwise, I am in complete agreement with you, even about Mariappa. Yes, on balance, he should go but, ideally, only on loan to gain experience.

Prof Plum - to quote you: "Give Hoofers till October."
1st or 31st of October?
If the 1st, that'll be 8 weeks & maybe 10 matches (assuming season starts 9th August) so you're having a larf! I say honour his contract until 2010.

As for "And before any numpty bothers to post an imbecilic ‘who are you going to replace him with?’ response, how many of you had actually even heard the name Adrian Boothroyd before he took over from the extremely ill-treated Ray Lew?" I hadn't - had you, then? I did some research once we showed interest in the bloke & he turned-out to be a better coach & motivator (IMHO) than the more experienced Ray Lew. Therefore, a successful appointment, in my opinion.

And yes - who are you hoping to replace him with??? Sven? Big Phil Scolari? Sir Alex? Arsene Wenger? Sam Allardyce? Your good self? As an imbecilic, Happy Clapping, numpty I really would value your opinion....

As for Dave Bassett & what he's doing now, I suspect you've probably got a head start on me there, too & see him whenever you look in a mirror......

Berks Horn, London says...
1:02pm Thu 15 May 08

Peter, you're right. I'd keep Sadler - I think he's a decent left back and looked good going forward on the overlap with McAnuff yesterday. If we got the right money for Ellinton I'd deal but I fear we wouldn't get the £3.25M we paid for him at this point in time.

Jay has been a great servant to the club and of all of them I'd be most sad to see him go. But I fear that he's become disillusioned with Aidy and will be looking elsewhere anyway. Plus, he's given some pretty shocking displays second half of the season.

Maybe you're right about Mariappa going out on loan but he's certainly not first team material at this point.

At last we have a recognition that Boothroyd needs to change the way we play. I criticise him for not doing it sooner in November when our system of the long ball had been worked out by our opponents, we were not playing well, and the players used couldn't execute the system. It was his system.
Furthermore, his selection of players he has brought have been questionable apert from the Janaury signings excluding John.
Let's hope the lessons are learnt.

We finished 6th but only won a third of our home games - hence the disillusionment of stay away fans who realised that we are not yet good enough to go up with any prospect of enjoying a successful season.
I think most fans want a better style of play as a starting point so we can get back to generating a crowd atmosphere that makes the Vic buzz so it's good to read of the coming shake up.
It's not easy just to dump in-contract players Berko although some sort of loan deals may be possible for those not transferred on or released.
AB has some major decisions to make - if we are to pass the ball about and maybe play a diamond formation then give the fluent players a chance to establish themselves and forget old prejudices.
We need a better keeper who doesn't freeze when instructed to try to dominate the area, a reliable scorer (easily said), a balance of left and right sided players and a 'general' at the back to keep things solid. Also don't sell our key players to Fulham - the new enemy....
'In this division a bunch of guys who you've never heard of turn up and beat you 1 - 0' saith the man from West Brom.
There are a few very capable players in teams like Blackpool, Scunny etc who could make an impact here.

Good effort last night which was ruined by the defensive lapse between Lee & Demerit (who looked strangely out of form throughout.)

Glad to see us play some decent football but really can't understand why it happened so late in the season.

To all those morons calling for Boothroyd's head, he signed a new 3-year deal only last year and should be given the chance to turn things around - which he obviously intends to do.

The Championship will be very tough next year, lots of big sides will be pushing hard, so I would settle for another top six season (automatic promotion will be extremely tough) but unlike this year, with us playing decent football and our supporters behind the team rather than at each other's throats.

It's not the end of the world, so let's keep the faith & Come on you Golden Boys!

Wasn't suggesting that we dump the in-contract players but attempt to flog them off. They're all players that have legs and most would get games at some club or another in the Championship or below. Most of them are not up to the standard we need though and by getting rid we'd cut the wage bill which might allow us to offer better wages to a smaller but more quality set of players to build up a leaner, meaner squad.

We should be looking at bit part players from the Premiership (Boro have a quality winger I hear), maybe an odd experienced head a la Nicky Barmby, young talent like Ebanks-Blake or Hoolahan, maybe a few cheaper, quality foreign players.

I fear the worst for next season. There’s going to be a huge turnover among the playing staff this summer including those who want to leave (Shittu, DeMerit etc) and others who’ll get the chop because they’re clearly not up to it – Bangura, Williamson et al.

This means that for the first three months we’ll be expected to give the new look side ‘a chance to gel’ by which time we’ll be at best mid-table or (in my opinion more likely) among the early season relegation front runners…

Not going up this year was without any shred of doubt more damaging to WFC than going down would have been the season they booted Lewington out.

And when’s Plan B being announced then?

GUTTED by the football played GUTTED by the tactics GUTTED by the spin Gutted by the way this club is being run Mr Chairman Gutted it took untill last two games of season for you to attempt to play the game on the ground Mr Boothroyd GUTTED you did not listen to the fans earlier GUTTED that NOW we will have to sit an watch as you have to sell the few good players we do have i.e Shittu,Smith as Chairman has no money and will insist on the cost cuttings GUTTED that we will now have plan B east stand if that even happens ! Basically Gutted we threw away a 9 point lead and ended up being thrashed 6-1 in the play-offs that is 9-1 against Hull in last couple of months and FINALLY gutted WE HAVE GONE BACKWARDS selling KING,YOUNG,BOUAZZA,M AHON,SPRING ,failure to hold onto FOSTER,JOHNSON premiership we were havin a laugh ! unfortunatley Mr Chairman we are not laughing ,you must be though as we have forked out for season tickets already ,as we had to or lose them before knowing what we were paying for ,Now after less than one season you want us to buy another NEW kit ,so much for agreement we would only change every two years ,you must think we are mugs ! Enjoy laughing at us TIME FOR CHANGE ALLROUND !
You do talk a lot of crap. You must know the background behind why the players you listed left, it's not that simple. Who said we're going to sell Shittu and Smith?? S##t post.
Wake up and smell the coffee ,THIS club has no money so our ASSETS i.e SHITTU/SMITH will be sold IN fact in Shittu's case it is an absolute cert, you just keep clapping and accepting it ,KING did not need to be sold just because he wanted to go he should have been managed properley told to get on with it especially as we paid his wages when he was injured all season in Premiership told he owed us and wait until end of season ,as soon as the window shut he would have had to knuckle down and he would have scored goals ,goals that we did not score that cost us promotion ,just like Hughes did at Blackburn with Macarthy and Roberts who by the way knuckled down and are now happy again ! THAT is how to manage ,basically if you say you are unhappy Watford would sell you, DISGRACE !

I don't accept everything the club does but it was quite obvious that King was not on his game for some time, he was getting too big for his boots and i agree he should have been shipped out.
Can't see Smithy going, Shittu have to wait and see. Some people on this site are never happy. I was sat two rows behind Simpson and Ashton last night signing with the fans. The guy has the clubs best interests at heart and will do the right thing. Wouldn't want to be Leicester, now there's a crap chairman! As for the others, Bouazza was chasing the money, Young offer too good to refuse, Foster injured, Johnson wanted by Boro. We still have a good squad in my opinion.

Whats all this moaning about aidys SPIN.what did you expect him to say? "the players are'nt up to it, my tattics are wrong". The truth is he had to keep positive, for the team, the fans, to not show weakness to the other teams. now the seasons over, he can start to say what he rally means. last night on sky he spoke about anew playing style next season, along with a change of personel. Have a bit of faith in a man who to his credit took us up, semi final, gave us a reasonable crack in the premiership,(but for poor ref desicions,we might had had a few more points) and finally play offs this year. Along the way we lost top players foster, hammmer, asley, MK, none of which he could do anything about. looking forward to next year already. YELLOWS!!!

Prof Plum you said "Give Hoofers till October. If there’s no improvement in playing style/results by then he’s gotta go."

I wouldn't particulary recommend this as a sensible approach - imagine if the club had done as you had said this time last year after relegation. Performances to October were resonable and results were great!

The signs are there that AB is learning his trade & personally, I can't see anything can be gained by getting rid of him. Different story from the playing staff though.

Whoever said let Loach step up, get rid of Poom & make Lee number 2 has probably picked it in one - although (don't laugh) Gretna's keeper Greg Fleming is up for grabs - extremely promising 21 year old with international caps to his name & rumours of Championship clubs sniffing around already.

Getting rid of under-contract dross may be more of a problem than who to bring in. I think there are a few already here who have been under-used so far and who will thrive under the 'new system' - Priskin, Hoskins, Rinaldi, Aloi for example.

The main problem is in defence - for ages we were crying out for a left back. Nothing wrong with who we got, but now we seriously need a right back.

Many expect DeMerit to leave, leaving us short in central defence, but wasn't there an agreement that Davenport would be back permanently? If that is the case, and Shittu stays, then we really only need one defender and a goalkeeper to be successfully competitive next year.

Oh - and no way would I let Darius go. Far too valuable both up front & in defence.

well the clearout has already started with stewart going last week and diaguraga, mcnamee and ashikodi all looking set to follow. this can only be a positive thing as it means we are freeing up wages hopefully for a couple of decent purchases.
Im hoping callum davenport will come back once his neck has healed as he would be perfect in our set up. I like the rest of you think we need to getr shot of even more players, but i think boothroyd will be doing so in stages as soon as he knows where his targets look likely to go.
I was really happy with the football we played in the last two games, we made many chances at home with our passing style and had it not been for that stupid first goal that we conceeded before half time last night i beleive we could have at least got the tie all level. It is good to see Boothroyd can chage the way we play and that he has enough humility to recognise where he is going wrong.
Remember supporters west brom went out of the playoffs last year and look at them now, all hope is not lost! (although my twenty pound bet we would go up has!) keep cheering vicarage faithfull!

Maybe the shock of us playing in the deck has at long last sunk in to A Bs thick skull...We played some good soccer the past 2 games, perhaps the players where in shock as they looked good in both games against Hull....
We need a keeper badly, a right sided defender, and 2 good midfielders, but the luckiest person to not get the chop is our manager..As far as i am concerned he owes us all for his total stubborness, i truly hope he has learnt a lesson from the debacle of the past 20 games played..
I for one am getting fed up of being known as a supporter of a side that plays up and unders only..
Lets wipe the slate clean, and become a side that plays total soccer, and in honesty this is the only way to go, if our side ever makes the premiership...
Start to gain a few lost friends in us A B by unloading the few dead wood players we have on our books..
