Pensioner completes charity bike ride

A 73-year-old Borehamwood man has cycled from London to Brighton to raise money for charity.

Mick Curran, of Croxdale Road, cycled 56 miles raising around £500 for Macmillan nurses and the British Heart Foundation, last month.

Speaking after the event Mr Curran said: "I hadn't been on a bike since I was 35 and the next time I got on one was in April when I was 73. Once I was on the bike I was really pleased. I am still hoping to raise more money from this event."

The London to Brighton Bike Ride is the largest charity cycle with 27,000 people embarking on the scenic route between Clapham to Brighton on the south coast.

Less than a month after the event, Mr Curran is already planning his next trip, a 1,200 mile cycle ride. He said: "I plan on continuing because I am really enjoying it. Next year i'm cycling from John O'Groats in Scotland to Land's End.

"I've had a lot of help from my family and the local pub, which I really appreciate." The average cycling time for the John O'Groats to Land's End route being between ten and 14 days, Mr Curran added: "I might pack it up when I'm 80."
