House fire tackled in Shenley
Firefighters tackled a blaze at a house in Shenley this morning.
Two residents of the property, in Charwood Close, escaped unhurt after the fire began in their utility room at around 7.30am.
At first the couple tried to put out the flames themselves after being woken by their smoke alarm, but it was eventually extinguished by fire crews from Borehamwood and St Albans.
It is thought the fire started accidentally after an electrical transformer overheated.
The utility room was badly smoke damaged.
Bob Williams, White Watch commander at Borehamwood fire station, said: "On arrival the occupants of the house were outside.
"They had attempted to tackle the fire themselves by using some pans of water.
"They were very fortunate that both doors to the utility room were shut, which prevented the fire and smoke from spreading."
