A moving play inspired by the experiences of a generation of children and parents who were separated by migration from the Caribbean to England in the 1960s is coming to Lancaster's Nuffield Theatre.
Sonia Hughes's Weeding Cane being staged in association with Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre on Thursday and Friday, March 2 and 3 at 8pm takes its audience on a moving journey through a young girl's exper-ience of separation and reunion.
It is the story of Joy, a child left behind with her grandmother in the Caribbean when her mother migrates to England followed by her sudden shipment from home to join her mother and the stepfather she has never met.
Told simply, in a sparse poetic style, the stories and words of the mother and daughter are brought to life by Carla Henry and Juliet Ellis, pictured left.
The Nuffield says Weeding Cane has a powerful reach through its empathy with the uneasy dynamic between mothers and daughters.
