ST ALBANS MP Anne Main has expressed her deep concern over plans to introduce a Quango with powers to compulsorily purchase green spaces for development.

The Conservative MP condemned the proposals for a Homes and Communities Agency yesterday fearing some of the most cherished open spaces in St Albans could become building sites.

The Agency would have the power to make mandatory purchases of common land, allotments, village greens, formal public gardens and burial grounds for development.

Anne said: "I am extremely concerned about the creation of this new government body.

"Not only will it be able to act as a planning authority without reference to democratically elected Councilors, but it will also be able to unilaterally snaffle up some of our most treasured open green spaces for development purposes.

She added: "Allotments such as those in London Colney and commons such as those in Colney Heath may suddenly be transformed into building sites at the behest of a remote arm of the Government.

"This bill needs serious amending and I will continue to oppose its more controversial aspects, particularly those which threaten our environment and green spaces."
