THE St Albans-based Campaign for Real Ale has launched a guide to beer in Germany, just in time for the World Cup.

The Good Beer Guide Germany, four years in preparation, is the first ever comprehensive book of its type to the country.

Football fans can find the best places to drink as they follow the England team through group matches in Frankfurt, Nuremberg and Cologne.

For example, the guide recommends the Lederer Kulturbrauerei in Nuremberg, which has a range of artefacts on display including a steam engine and brewing equipment.

Author Steve Thomas, who has built up an intimate knowledge of more than 1,250 breweries, about 2,000 pubs and 7,500 beers, said: "When I began the book I had no idea the next World Cup would be held in Germany, but any fan of football who appreciates a pure beer of almost unequalled quality will need a copy of this guide."

The guide, which costs £16.99, can be ordered from CAMRA direct by calling 01727 867201, or visiting its base in Hatfield Road.
