WRESTLING, street dancing and death-defying aerial displays were just a few of the attractions to grip visitors at the Friern Barnet Summer Show this year. Bright sunshine attracted record crowds, with hundreds turning out to enjoy the mayhem in Friary Park, off Friern Park Lane, last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Organiser Adrian Benjamin, vicar of All Saints Church, described the event as a "huge success". One of the highlights, he said, was his fearless trip on the "wheel of death" – a ferris wheel on which two cylindrical cages spin and rotate. Other main attractions were the dog show, which overran by an hour, and the fruit and vegetable competition, which has been taking place since the fair began in the Second World War. Mr Benjamin said: "Of all the shows in Barnet, this is the one with the longest history. With the fruit and veg it has come full circle – in the war people were told to dig for victory, and now Gordon Brown is again telling people they should grow their own food."
