A high-tech indoor surfing park offering waves up to 8ft in height is being planned for London.

The new Surfdome may cost as much as £30m to build and will feature special wave-making technology by New Zealand surfing company ASR.

The main pool, which will generate waves that travel up to 60m, will be able to simulate conditions at over 40 of the world's best surf spots, including waves in Australia and Indonesia.

Surfdome Ltd, who own the UK rights to the technology, are currently in talks with developers in Stratford and Greenwich in east London, and Wembley in west London to finalise a building site for the park.

The complex will contain three pools in total, as well as a climbing wall and a range of shops, bars and restaurants.

"We'd like top athletes from all over the world to compete in our pools," said Justin Stone, founder of Surfdome Ltd.

He hopes to emulate the success of snowboarding as a sport in Britain and ultimately promote surfing as an Olympic sport.

The centre will offer teaching facilities in its two smaller pools to teach surfing to beginners and intermediates.

The British Surfing Association and British Professional Surfing Association have been brought on board to ensure the centre has "best possible effect" on surfing as a sport, according to the company's website.

The park is expected to open to the public in early 2009.
