A double shooting which left a 35-year-old man dead has been blamed on a Yardie gang.

Gary Guthrie died after being shot in the chest in the early hours of last Monday in Streatham High Road.

A second man in his 30s was taken separately to a south London hospital suffering from gunshot wound. He is thought to be in a stable condition.

This weekend saw armed patrols in Lambeth and Southwark as the police attempt to convince the public the borough is safe despite the shooting.

Four nightclubs remained closed at the weekend on the advice of officers.

According to The Sun officers have intelligence linking Mr Guthrie's killing with Yardie gangs blamed for 30 murders a week in Jamaica.

Detective Superintendent John Corrigan, of Lambeth Police, said despite concerns over recent police intelligence, people should not be afraid to visit the borough.

"We are continuing to engage with other clubs in to enhance security. It is to reassure people."

A senior police source was quoted as say: "It's very worrying to see the Yardies back on the streets of London.

"We are on red alert."

In 1993 Yardies were blamed for the cold-blooded murder of PC Patrick Dunne, who was on patrol in Clapham when he stumbled across a shooting incident.
