Italian detectives investigating the murder of Coulsdon student Meredith Kercher say they have found a bloody footprint in the bedroom of her American flatmate.

Meredith, 21, was found semi-naked with her throat cut in her bedroom of the Perugia share house where she was staying on November 3.

She was studying in Italy as part of her university degree.

Forensic teams found the footprint in suspect Amanda Knox's bedroom using a new chemical process.

Knox, her Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and Italian-Ivory Coast national Rudy Hermann Guede are all in Italian police custody.

All three deny any part in Meredith's murder.

The footprint comes a day after police revealed they had found Sollecito's DNA on the broken fastener of the bra Meredith was wearing on the night of her death.

Under Italian law, the suspects can be held for up to a year without trial.

Their next court appearance is expected to be January 21 when the judge overseeing the case is reportedly appointing experts to examine the hard drives of computers belonging to Meredith, Sollecito and Knox.
