Is Hounslow the new Hollywood?
 |
| On set and in the action. |
Lights, camera, action! A slice of Hollywood can be experienced in Hounslow with places across the borough featuring as backdrops and locations for famous films.
Reese Witherspoon strolled through the gardens of Chiswick House in Vanity Fair, Nigel Hawthorne was a raving royal in the Madness of King George at Syon Park and Juliet Stevenson crashed a wedding at Gunnersbury Park Estate in Bend It Like Beckham.
Elijah Wood has even pulled a pint in between takes at The Griffin Pub in Brentford.
He was at the Brook Road South pub filming a scene for Green Street. The signs outside were changed to make it look like a different pub and the name became the Brigid Abbey.
Kelly McCormack, of The Griffin pub, said: "They did a scene where the pub was being firebombed.
"They took a couple of the windows out and put in fake, jagged glass. The lighting from the inside and blowing smoke out made the pub look like it was on fire.
"Elijah Wood and others were pulling someone out of the pub and bundling him in the car. The regulars loved it and were peeping out of the window from the function room."
With all the starring roles Hounslow haunts have played, a new map has been drawn up to pinpoint film locations in West London and invite people to explore them.
The map is a visual taster of what is on offer with details and images of interesting and accessible film locations and a large map with suggested trails and markers.
One in five visitors are inspired to holiday in Britain because of a film they have seen. Today film tourism is a growing global phenomenon creating a new breed of tourist called the "set-jetter".
Councillor Peter Thompson, leader of Hounslow Council, said: "I hope residents in Hounslow and across west London will pick up this map and take the opportunity to explore some of these locations.
"You never know, that caf, park or church at the end of your road might be more famous than you know."
Film maps will be available in locations across the borough including cinemas and libraries.
It can also be viewed at hounslow.gov.uk.
