STAFF were left traumatised after a masked robber smashed open four jewellery cabinets at Galio Jewellers before snatching thousands of pounds worth of designer watches.

Just before 11am, last Thursday, a black P-reg Saab pulled up outside the shop in George Street, St Albans, and a man got out.

He was let into the shop through a security door and told staff not to move while he held open the door for his accomplice.

The second man, who was wearing a balaclava, smashed the glass display cases with a claw hammer and grabbed around 25 Jaeger Le Coultre and IWC watches.

The men ran out of the shop and jumped into the black Saab, where two other men were waiting.

All four drove down George Street towards St Michael's and the car was later found abandoned outside The Blue Anchor pub in Fishpool Street.

The men then jumped into another black car.

The owner of Galio Jewellers, which specialises in high quality watches and jewellery, said he believed the thieves were specifically targeting the watches.

He said: "It was horrific.

"The staff were very shaken and completely traumatised by the robbery.

"We need witnesses to come forward. Someone must have seen something."

Detective Constable Pete Ward from the Central Area Crime Unit said that it was fortunate that there were no customers in the shop during the robbery and that none of the staff were injured.

He added: "However, they were quite understandably shaken by the violent nature of the robbery.

"These men would have attracted quite a bit of attention in the town centre and we are seeking the public's help in identifying them.

"I'm sure there were lots of people in the town on Thursday morning who saw the black Saab car being driven erratically by a large Asian man who did not appear to be a confident driver.

"Perhaps you saw the robbery itself? Or did you see the second black car? Anyone with any information, however seemingly insignificant, is asked to contact police."

He reminded people that if they are approached by anyone selling watches, that they may be stolen.

If anyone has been offered a stolen watch, then they should contact the police.

The first man is described as black, around 5ft 6ins to 5ft 7ins tall, of slim build with stubble.

He wore a dark jumper, dark trousers, a black NYC baseball cap and white socks and trainers.

The second man was also black. He was between 5ft 11ins and 6ft tall, of stocky build with a large head. He wore a balaclava and dark clothing.

The driver of the car is described as Asian and was of very large build. His passenger was also described as being of Asian appearance.

Anyone who saw the robbery, recognises the descriptions of these men or has seen the black car is asked to contact DC Ward on 01707 638234, the Constabulary's non-emergency number 0845 3300 222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
