Veteran striker Paul Furlong notched his 200th League goal as Barnet got the three points they needed to beat the drop.

With Chester City losing, the Bees can no longer finish in the bottom two.

Once again it was Furlong's day, the striker's goal the highlight of a rather disappointing performance.

In truth, Bournemouth were the better team and created most of the chances.

However, the Bees will not care, their League Two survival secured with four games to go, a fine achievement by manager Ian Hendon and his troops.

Hendon was forced to make one change from the side that started against Rotherham on Tuesday night, with Adam Birchall coming in for the injured John O'Flynn.

With Bournemouth bringing a large following, there was a good atmosphere and both sides looked up for it in the opening exchanges.

The Cherries almost took the lead on ten minutes, Lee Bradbury cleverly getting away from marker Kenny Gillet and sending in a looping header that beat keeper Jake Cole, only to bounce back off the bar.

At the other end, Birchall was slipped in by a quick free-kick, but his first touch was too heavy and the chance was gone.

Midway through the first half, Cole made a great save to deny Brett Pitman from close range after a mistake from Gary Breen.

From the corner, Neal Bishop had to head a Jason Pearce far-post header off the line, as the visitors continued to ask most of the questions.

Yannick Bolasie did have a go for Barnet from distance, but it was more in hope than expectation, and the ball flew well wide.

Bishop then saw an audacious volley from the touchline tipped over by Bournemouth keeper Shwan Jalal, as the Bees at last started to get into the game.

However, there was no doubt the Cherries were the better team in the first half and they could consider themselves unfortunate not to have been leading at the interval.

And Bournemouth had the first chance of the second period, Pitman forcing Cole to turn round a free-kick.

But it was the Bees who struck on 51 minutes. Gillet floated over a high ball and Furlong beat his marker to head into the far corner for his 200th League goal.

The Cherries almost responded immediately, Joe Devera clearing a deflected Jeff Goulding shot off the line, after the ball had looped over Cole.

The visitors were now forced to throw men forward and, after sub Sammy Igoe and again tested Cole, Albert Adomah broke for Barnet, Jawal tipping over his shot.

Bournemouth continued to plug away, but they were now struggling to create chances, the clock ticking against them.

With four minutes to go, a poor Devera header back to Cole fell short and Bradbury nipped in, only to see the home keeper bravely block his effort.
