FOOTBALL: Landmark goal for Marshall

ENFIELD TOWN marked their first match since the departure of manager Jim Chandler with a 1-1 draw at Ware in Ryman Division 1 North yesterday.

The club is considering who will take over the reins of the Goldsdown Road outfit, with first team coach Stuart Margolis and youth team boss Mike Smee in charge yesterday.

And Town were unlucky not to return from Hertfordshire with all three points after having two goals disallowed before half-time.

Simon Tickner and Ricci Crace were the men denied before third-placed Ware took the lead on 65 minutes through Scott Nielson.

However, the visitors refused to lie down and five minutes later the impressive Luke Marshall fired them level from close range after darting through the Ware defence.

It was his first senior goal for the club, and he could have had a second late on, only for a Ware defender to make an important block.

Town are back in action on Tuesday evening when they travel to Wembley in the semi-finals of the Middlesex Charity Cup.

Enfield 1893 maintained their two-point advantage at the top of the Essex Senior League Premier Division with a battling 4-2 win at Mauritius Sport & Pennant.

And they can open the gap further with victory at home to Eton Manor on Tuesday evening.

The visitors looked to be well on course for all three points after taking a two-goal lead at half-time.

But lowly Sports hit back in an end-to-end second half to make E's work hard for the victory.

Enfield took the lead on 38 minutes when Ricardo Armado's floated cross dropped perfectly for Sherwin Stanley to control the ball and pick his spot.

That became 2-0 in stoppage time when Neil Hughes made a fine run down the wing before putting in a low cross for Danny Jones to ram home from six yards.

Sports pulled one back seven minutes after the break when a harmless header from Steve Opoka somehow found its way into the bottom corner.

The visitors made it 3-1 on 65 minutes when Hughes ran through on goal, cleverly lobbed the ball wide of the keeper and slotted home.

Almost straight from the kick-off E's won a free-kick some 35 yards from goal and Graeme Butler's delivery fell to Jones who made it 4-1.

Allen Browne pulled one back on 82 minutes after a good run, but Enfield held on to take all three points.

Ashley Taylor-Forbes struck twice as Brimsdown Rovers returned to winning ways in the Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division with a 3-1 victory at home to Biggleswade United.

Jimmy Martin got the other goal for Rovers with Martin Russell replying for the visitors.

Brimsdown return to action in the semi-finals of the Challenge Trophy on Wednesday night when they play host to Holmer Green.

Cockfosters had to settle for a point as they drew 0-0 in a scrappy game at Colney Heath.

David Craig's men are in cup action on Tuesday evening when they play host to North Mymms in the Potters Bar Charity Cup.

Winchmore Hill drew 0-0 at Broomfield in Senior Division 1 of the Southern Amateur League, with Southgate Olympic losing 3-2 at home to Old Westminster Citizens in Senior Division 3.

Hill looked to have sealed all three points in the dying seconds, only for Broomfield keeper Mark Robbins to pull off a superb diving save.

It was a battling display from the visitors, but they were unable to make their possession count.
