FOOTBALL: No Island dream for new boss Margolis

STEWART MARGOLIS' first game officially in charge of Enfield Town ended in defeat as they were beaten 2-0 at Canvey Island in their final Ryman Division 1 North match of the season.

The caretaker boss was officially handed the reins for the new season on Thursday, with Mike Smee as head coach and former Wingate & Finchley manager Adam Lee as joint first team boss.

The visitors had the better of the first half with Canvey goalkeeper Mel Capleton having to be alert to prevent an own goal from Andrew West, as well as having a corner cleared off the line.

At the other end, Jason Willis made a brilliant early save while play-off chasing Canvey also hit the bar.

The home side took the lead on 49 minutes with a header from the impressive Leon Gordon and sealed victory 15 minutes from time through Ian Luck's flick.

The result saw the Essex side take the final play-off place, where they will take on AFC Sudbury, with Redbridge facing Ware in the other eliminator. Meanwhile, Town ended an up-and-down league campaign 12th in the table.

Enfield have one final game this season when they take on Hillingdon Borough in the final of the Middlesex Charity Cup at Hayes this Wednesday evening.

Enfield 1893 missed out on the Essex Senior League Premier Division title after Concord Rangers beat Barkingside 1-0 to take the spoils on goal difference.

E's went into the final day of the season three points clear at the top of the pile following their 3-1 midweek win over Bowers & Pitsea.

A Barkingside win by five clear goals, or a Concord victory by any scoreline would have denied them the crown, and in the end it was the latter that proved their undoing, with the visitors winning a hard-fought game 1-0.

The handful of Enfield fans in the crown would have been happy after a goalless first half, but with time running out Danny Heale struck to secure the title for Concord on the club's 40th anniversary.

Brimsdown Rovers ended their Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Holmer Green.

But it could have been all three with only an injury-time goal from Danny Craggs denying ten-man Brimsdown all three points.

Michael Pelley gave Brimsdown the lead 60 seconds after half-time with a well-struck volley from a corner. But the centre half then blotted his copybook 15 minutes later after alleged remarks to the referee.

Green pushed forward and in injury time Craggs ran onto a good ball and the young striker showed a mature head to coolly fire home.

Brimsdown have the chance to finish their season on a high note when they take on Chalfont Peter in the final of the Challenge Cup at Hanwell Town on Tuesday evening.

Cockfosters looked to have secured a deserved point against champions Beaconsfield SYCOB before the visitors struck five minutes from time to seal a 1-0 win.

Anthony Wright's goal after running onto a hopeful punt forward was all that separated the two sides in a game of few chances. However, the home side were aggrieved when Dave Pigden's earlier header was chalked off following an offside decision.

Cockfosters end their season by taking on Old Owens in the final of the Potters Bar Charity Cup following a midweek 2-1 semi-final win over Colney Heath.
