Under-fire Boothroyd explains switches

Aidy Boothroyd said his baffling decison to replace Jobi McAnuff with Mat Sadler was tactical.

With Watford a goal behind and chasing the game, Boothroyd opted to replace McAnuff, one of his most creative players, with Sadler and move the left-footed Jordan Stewart to the right-hand side of midfield.

Nathan Ellington, meanwhile, was left warming the bench until three minutes from time when he was introduced Stewart.

"Jobi wasn't injured," confirmed Boothroyd. "I just wanted to change it around and get some inswinging balls into the box and test Speroni and their back four.

"We were dominant for long periods and bringing Jobi off and putting Jordan there gives us a better aerial threat."

McAnuff described the afternoon as "one of the most disappointing of my career".

I feel cheated - that was an incredible decision and proves he is clueless. If that was what you wanted to do at least try switching Jobi and Tom first - Stewart was never going to work, and actually only lasted a matter of minutes on the right.

This sums up how clueless Hoofroyd is.
Anyone who wants him to stay is welcome to watch the crap his teams serve up next season.

fingers crossed we will still make the playoffs. what a strange game, one we could have won, i think we need to go 4-3-3 and attack more. boothroyds job will be in doubt come end of season if we dont go up, how we have thrown it all away i do not know

it has become evident since end October how much we miss KB's advice.17 home league games won3 drawn6 L8.15 points from 51.todays game was there for the taking but Jonjo on a yellow and not in the game meant Boothroyd needed Williamson on quickly, instead he took off our real attacking threat. The manager has moulded the club to his pattern, they are his tactics, his signings, his assistants, and his responsibility.now the whole sorry episode is due to his complete incompetance.

Aren't most of our players English speaking?

So why do Aidy and co need to spend so long writing comments for a sub before they come on which takes about 10 mins!

I mean if your 1/2 goals down does the player really need to work out what is required from them?

Doesn't this just sum up AB. Totally inept, totally clueless, out of his depth, and losing the dressing room by the minute.

What player in their right mind would want to come and play for him now?

Do us all a favour AB and take one of those 18 job offers you've had, because if this carries on you won't even get a job in the Conference League, let alone the Prem.

THAT incompetant decision alone should see him SACKED !

i watched aidy & malky, looking at their board, scribbling notes and working out what to tell the subs and what messagetoo pass on to the team. N E had to wait so long he put his coat back on. jay even sat back down. This was with 12 mins to go. The ball went out of play 5 times before Aidy put on his subs. What was the plan ... "Nat, you get a goal, tell Darius hes got toget one after they restart, oh and tell Tamas, love him to get one to. Still always look on the bright side , we might get em back in the play offs, and rather win those games than this.

Why did we ever sign Ainsworth or Rinaldi?
Collins John...mechanically unfit? No goalkeeper on the bench? This is professional football, not Sunday League. What if Richard Lee had got hurt, it does happen.
I am starting to lose respect now for the manager and I do not like to say that. But I just cannot understand his decisions. If we make the playoffs it will be a sorry exit early on, but at least that will put me and probably many others out of this misery.

What do you posters, particularly the clappers, make of AB bleating about lack of money being the reason for his tactics?
He has been backed financially better than any other WFC manager in history, and we must have spent more than almost any other club in the division. With WBA gaining £3.25m + NE's wages, and us losing the same, that presumably makes an £8m shift alone. Is it just me or are you sick of this idiot?
For the record, Sage reckons the sheltered housing money is ringfenced for the new stand...because the club said it was. It doesn't seem like it to me. Again, what do you all make of it. I reckon even though Colin is a wind up merchant, he read the tea leaves right.

OK, guys - cool the negativity. Aidy, Mark & Graham are our top team: proven high performance leaders who need our backing through the hard times. Am I right? OK we've plateau'd, but that's only because our productivity expectations are high - thanks to those three dynamic guys, right? I've seen this before across many high-pressure business scenarios, believe me. We've had a three-year above-maximal return on & off the game & we're punching above our benchmark weight as an organisation, with a great strategic capability and soon to be welcoming ground facility for ordinary people & VIP guests. But now we need to leverage all our skills as a workforce & pull together, & get behind the Gloden boys. This means you! Because currently we're revealing a skills gap as a middle team that defeats goal expectations. We're in the play-offs, guys - celebrate! Let's have some positivity. If you can't take the heat then get out of the kitchen. Or better still, step right up to the plate & put your money & reputations on the line. I'm committed, to Aidy & the lads, are you? I don't understand why everyone is getting their knickers in a twist after the result today. What did they expect? We have no strikers except, on a good day, DH. This has been the case since MK went and was replaced by players that can only be described as rubbish. The manager always takes off a front player and brings on a defender early in the second half, whether we are winning, drawing or losing. He must have a Teach Yourself Football manual that tells him this is what he has to do. His substitutions have been quite mad - as they always have been. His buying of players has been woeful. However, we should make the play-off - we only neeed two points to make sure, but, sadly, if we go up under AB we will be a laughing stock. Since KB went AB has shown he is tactically clueless. If he is not sacked then I'd prefer us to be in the Championship than the Premiership. We would not look quite so inept.

According to Boothroyd "I genuinely believe it will go to the wire". Perhaps, but we won't be involved. We seem to lack guile. He is probably trying to do imaginative tactical changes to unlock the opposition, but he ends up doing things that are bizarre and inexplicible to everyone even the players. The idea of getting in a young manager that was keen to learn for a good long haul so we had some continuity and growth was a good idea, but AB doesn't seem to be growing as a manager. At the begining of the season we would all have been happy with 5th if we knew Charlton and the Blades would do no better, but considering the money we have spent, how poor most Championship teams are and how we have failed to stop this awful run of results something needs to be done, by which I obviously mean a managerial shake-up. There is no point do anything until the end of the season. Who would come in at such short notice? And would a panic appointment be good in the long run? And does anyone fancy the idea of Malky McKay as caretaker manager for the play offs? Thought not. But as soon as the season ends interviews need to begin.

And by the way, the screen that popped up when logging on to the official website that talked about the Promotion push seems to have vanished. Perhaps somebody at the club has got a grip on reality.

The fact is we dominated for large periods and looked the more likley to win it in the period before their two quickfire goals. But unfortunately with our strikers we're always going to struggle to turn posession into goals - a fact reflected in the ludicrous amount of draws. I'm as bemused by the McAnuff substitution as anyone but, in the spirit of retaining a little perspective, this was no-where near as bad as some posters are making out. Having said that, God knows how we'll beat anyone over two legs in the play-offs. If we even get there.

sheffield utd and charlton would like to be in u our position, they were relegated last season and are tailed off. all we need is couple of players to bang in a few goals and confidence comes back.keep your chins up and fight to the end. ps we could be luton town, look where they are!
This slightly surreal contradiction runs through many of the posts ... securing a play off spot is good so why moan? .. but we have played some consistently dire stuff in recent months and Div 1 beckons:
AB has been the common factor in both 'seasons' Manager during our dream runaway start start when we collected so many points we will still scrape into a play off spot.
Manager during the recent slump when every decison he makes is thrust under the microscope.
If we give credit to AJ, MK and Keith B. in the early season romp we must surely give credit for this success to AB too. If he halts the current slide and gets us promoted we will have the money to build the team. Come on you 'Orns.

Total and utter crap again. I crossed my fingers and wished before the game that we might actually see some football, whatever the result. I was wasting my time when Shittu chested the ball down and then launched it into the Upper Rous. Please, dont get promoted, we'll only get Derbyfied or worse with this clown in charge. OUT!

Getting into the play-offs does constitute a successful season, but the fact of the matter is that we are in free-fall. 3 wins in 17 home games is terrible and we have won once in about 13 matches. Week in week out it is the same crap. We are getting worse.

The worry is we play like that next season it will be a fight against relegation.

We play much worse than we did under Lewington for example who had no money but got slated for getting us into mid table and 2 Cup semis..

Aidy had done well but he only piled pressure on himself with certain comments this season and seems to be cracking.

AB had no intention in winning this game - any manager with quality would have changed the format and made changes giving the team a chance - NOT in the last minutes of the game, you only do that when you are winning and need to defend your position.

As I have said before AB has an agenda but it is not one to get promoted, sorry no matter what at the end of the season be it promoted or stay in the championship AB must go!

The major worrying fact that puts Aidy's season into perspective is that when Warnock joined Palace they were 21 points behind us. Our form is what relegation threatened teams suffer from yet we are still in the top 5. How can a team that was doing so well early on suddenly do so badly? Well we have covered a lot of this in previous posts. If Aidy was to be tempted elsewhere then I think John Ward would be a good replacement - he has done wonders at Carlisle in a very short space of time and with very little money. Perhaps Aidy was better in the transfer market when he did not have the funds so readily available as he has recently. The situation at Watford is very much of his own making - poor signings, loss of key personnel (on and off the pitch), unwillingness to accept criticism, lack of range of tactics, poor use of reserve team fixtures to keep everybody match fit. He perhaps can't be blamed for losing Young, Bouazza and King, as you don't want players who want out - and we were well recompensed for them - and selling GM was right in so far as he wasn't going to get another contract and so it made business sense. There have been positives in Bromby, Johnson, Eustace, Sadler, O'Toole'e promotion from juniors. It is not all bad, but it is a long way from being good.

Sage your analogy on watching matches sums up how many feel - I am glad I can use the excuse that a 600 mile round trip is difficult to fit in with other activities. What you say about the manager's position is also right.

According to Chris Kamara we were on top for most of the game. We hit the post and bar, had a goal disallowed and were looking the more likely to score until they got their first. Our weakness all season has been getting the ball in the net, and that is why I can't understand why the bench warmers haven't had the opportunity to develop some confidence in the reserves which they can then carry on to the first team if they come on as subs. There's been so much I haven't understood about Aidy this season, and he obviously feels that his 3 years means he has passed his apprenticeship and he can have a free rein. I seem to remember GT using Bertie
