Aidy Boothroyd said his baffling decison to replace Jobi McAnuff with Mat Sadler was tactical.
With Watford a goal behind and chasing the game, Boothroyd opted to replace McAnuff, one of his most creative players, with Sadler and move the left-footed Jordan Stewart to the right-hand side of midfield.
Nathan Ellington, meanwhile, was left warming the bench until three minutes from time when he was introduced Stewart.
"Jobi wasn't injured," confirmed Boothroyd. "I just wanted to change it around and get some inswinging balls into the box and test Speroni and their back four.
"We were dominant for long periods and bringing Jobi off and putting Jordan there gives us a better aerial threat."
McAnuff described the afternoon as "one of the most disappointing of my career".

It is now like visiting a loved one in prison must be.
you need to go out of loyalty but dread the experience & come away feeling worse than before.
You fear that your relative/friend is now nit only being rogered bt his cell mate but has beconme resigned to it & may even be starting to enjoy it.
Worse still the head warder oftens explanations that are increasingly ridiculous!

OK, guys - cool the negativity. Aidy, Mark & Graham are our top team: proven high performance leaders who need our backing through the hard times. Am I right? OK we've plateau'd, but that's only because our productivity expectations are high - thanks to those three dynamic guys, right? I've seen this before across many high-pressure business scenarios, believe me. We've had a three-year above-maximal return on & off the game & we're punching above our benchmark weight as an organisation, with a great strategic capability and soon to be welcoming ground facility for ordinary people & VIP guests. But now we need to leverage all our skills as a workforce & pull together, & get behind the Gloden boys. This means you! Because currently we're revealing a skills gap as a middle team that defeats goal expectations. We're in the play-offs, guys - celebrate! Let's have some positivity. If you can't take the heat then get out of the kitchen. Or better still, step right up to the plate & put your money & reputations on the line. I'm committed, to Aidy & the lads, are you? Things are still looking fresh. Wake up and smell the coffee!

You lot make me sick!! infact I am more mad at you lot posting this negative crap on here than I was after driving 200 mile round trip to see us loose agian. I know I risk getting a real slating for this post and called a clapper bt I don't care im so F**king mad. Yeah we are all Pi**ed off with the rersult and more worryingly how the season has gone since Nov. It makes me mad having to read the 'boothroyd out' week in week out. We have two games to go and we will make the play offs. What the hell does sacking our manager do for us now? We would not get a replacement in time anyway and lets see what decent maangers are out there waiting for a call from watford anyway. I've posted before on this. The time to call for Aidy's head is at the end of the season not now. The players need our support more than ever now we need unity. So we didn't reach the auto promotion but we will make the paly offs a great deal of teams would love to swap with us. So we need to put it behind us give it our all for the final two games and then the play offs. It's not gonna be easy (certainly given the way we are playing) but you never know and what we need is to give it our all and we need unity and for you lot to get behind the team and aidy. If we don't make it I'll be at the front of the line with you all calling for his head but not now!!

IF we go up via the play-offs(highly unlikely)we will do worse than derby.i dont think i could stomach a season in the premier league.our style of play is awful.typically long ball(up and at em!!)it is an embarresment on monday buying the papers and reading how crap we are, having to explain to non watford fans how bad we are.i fear for next season as all our better players will leave and join championship clubs leaving us with the doyleys and the kabbas.cheap stunt having gs sit in the rookery.i should have pulled him up and told him a few home truths when i had the chance at half time.
