Smith looking upwards

Tommy Smith says the team will remain positive despite the damaging defeat to Crystal Palace on the weekend.

The Hornets' automatic promotion hopes were ended after their third defeat in five games but Smith insists they can still lift themselves for the play-offs.

He said: "We are looking up not down and remaining positive. I'm a bit speechless because we felt as if we were in control and it is a bitter pill to swallow.

"Palace came here to sit back and they rode their luck but finished strongly."

But the talented winger refused to make excuses for the side's poor form and says they will not go down that route.

"We won't use excuses," Smith said. "We have been leaking goals and not scoring from our chances."

I can't believe how bad we've been playing and the results we've been getting recently. We played well in the first half against CP but couldn't find the back of the net. Boothroyd seems to have lost the plot with his subs. I think our season started so well that we just expected us to win every game which hasn't happened. I think it all went pear shaped when Adam Johnson left. He made us click and look dangerous on the counter. Aidy made a big mistake not spending big in January, but hopefully we can still get the play-offs and go up. If we do we need a MASSIVE clear out because most of them are simply not good enough! Comments?

We have let ourselves down by notting holding players to the lucrative contracts that they happily signed. We are solid at the back (however why does Shittu fall over everytime he kicks the ball?) Plenty of midfield options but gutless up front. King should have been forced to stay, he has a lot to answer to as does the board for selling him.

Lifer, says...
12:30pm Mon 21 Apr 08

Scott--I agree completely--selling HB & MK is acceptable ONLY if you have adequate replacements & we did not.

The evidence (to my mind) is clear that aidy has lost the plot and the belief of the players.

I would bring JDM in for Danny and Kabba for TP.

I would also only have 1 defender on benmch--LA is a better wide option than JS ( who is doing ok @ l back )

For me the team needs to be LEE-LD/JDM/LB/JS---J
E & JJ ( but JE needs to get better than his last 2 games) & TS-SK-DH-JM

subs. Poom/DS/LW/LA/TP

I agree Scot, but think it will be a struggle in the play offs as we do not look good against top six sides. I was hopeing we good fudge our way into the top two with all about us losing their heads but alas no.

Lifer, says...
12:35pm Mon 21 Apr 08

MM solid at back? really? last clean sheet was Stoke!

DS switches off but biggest issue in NO--NONE!!! movement so man on the ball has ltd options. We are static & totally predictable,at least SK makes runs & will help to create space rather than Timid Tamas or Nointeresst Nathan.

chris, hemel says...
12:58pm Mon 21 Apr 08

IMHO we need to give TS a roving role in the hole behind DH, with JMcN and Ainsworth providing pace and width. Play Williamson and Eustace as the holding midfield, and a back four of Bronby, Shittu, JDM, and Slater. Lee in goal.

Agreed that we need to have a clearout before next season.

Take your pick from Priskin, Ellington, Kabba, Francis, Jackson, Stewart(who's going thank god), Poom, Colins John, Bangura, Rinaldi, et all.

Berks Horn, London says...
12:59pm Mon 21 Apr 08

Scott, I agree 100%. And therein perhaps lies the problem. All but maybe 3 or 4 of the current side must be thinking, subconsciously at least, that if we get promoted via the playoffs they will at best be languishing in the reserves next season or at worst looking for/moving to a new club as we'd have to buy a lot of new players to even stand a chance of not "doing a Derby". If you buy quality players in January who can play in the Premiership then that sort of thinking doesn't come into play. Unfortunately we didn't do that.

1:24pm Mon 21 Apr 08

In business if you have incompetent employees, they are either retained or aloowed to leave. Why is football different? Surely the lametable display from JS, TP and JO'T on Saturday should mean that they were pulled of to an early bath and not play again until their skill or playmaking warrants. As a customer I am appauled.
Ps. Howard Webb the ref. was a tonic. If only the others were anywhere near as professional as he was. Ego only Rob Styles please note.

We have shown that we have no strength in depth when it comes to fringe players. Also it seems very obvious that Burkinshaw was the source of good tactics in the first half of the season. I'm glad that Smith can accept excuses won't do any good, too often we hear silly excuses and comments that shy away from giving a proper answer from players and managers alike.

The thing that always bugs me is the people that leave early when their team goes 2-0 down. If they leave its their choice and I understand it is a demonstration of frustration to the players and staff, but it still gets to me - each to their own though!

I'm not sure promotion to the premier league will do us any good at the moment while we are in this poor run of form. We need to get promoted while we are winning regularly.

Also, ~£3.5m for Ellington now looks like a shocking waste of money!

Tommy Smith - Player of the Season without the need to count the votes and one of those we want to keep whatever division we are in next year.

I believe there are a mixture of reasons why we are playing so badly.

1. Loss of confidence - in themselves, the team and the manager.

2. Realisation that many are not good enough for the Championship let alone the Prem.

3. Lack of Team Spirit & Belief when things go wrong.

4. Poor Leadership & Confused Thinking on and off the Pitch.

5. Not enough quality.

None of the above apply to Tommy Smith who has worked his socks off all season long.

Watching Ashley Young destroy Brum almost single-handedly yesterday reminded we what we were like in Aidy's first season; we were a team with, flair, pace, purpose, passion and bags of confidence bordering on arrogance, oh yes and goals!

Ashley & Co are not coming back but we need to get some of these qualities asap.

Starting with Aidy making a few tough decisions by only picking those who want to play, those who believe in themselves (& him) and give them a chance to show what they can do (in their best positions, it was bad enough watching Stewart playing left wing but on the right, complete madness!

Also stop delaying subs until it's too late other than to give them appearance money!

Be positive and we can beat Scunthorpe and then start preparing for the playoffs, when anything could happen.

Come on Aidy & You Golden Boys. It's time to rediscover & then keep the Faith!

I am a glasgow rangers supporter and one of my best mates is a mad watford supporter. I have been to three homes games with him this season and have got to say that the atmosphere at the watford v stoke game was amazing! what happened? I also went to the West brom game and that was quite a good atmospere untill they played us...(ive started saying we when I mention watford! hope thats acceptable from a blue nose?)untill they played us off the park and i am not surpised tony mowbury is doing so well he was an amazing manager for hibs. Anyway the next game I traveled 500 miles for was the barnsley match that was not a happy journey back to Glasgow on an overnight bus I can tell you. all I could think about was how much I dislike henderson, I was always told that to be good at football you have to be able to kick the ball, head the ball, pass the ball and also recognise a ball when its layed out front of you. henderson does not seem able to do any of these things. Everytime I see him play he seems to be playing with his blonde locks(surly not out of a bottle mr henderson?) he is also a bit fat and has no first touch or pace. personally speaking if I were Boothroyd i would play 4 4 2 with any two other stikers you have hanging around, ellington? smith? I think they are strikers. because henderson is caput. he has only scored 12 goals this season just beating king by one When we played stoke we had two excellent wingers playing what happened to them? and why when you kick of at home do you boot the ball out thus giving the other team possesion?
I havent been to wembley since scotland beat england 1 0 for euro 2000 and would love to go back but how would watfod handle palace there? my mate thinks it better that stoke slip back below hull because we will have more chance against them.

If boothroyd goes I would go for Billy davies as I think he is a good solid manager who plays good attacking football, he would also look to scotland for some players, I happen to think kris Boyd is one of the best finishers I have ever seen but walter smith just wont play him because he is obsessed with 5 4 1 and wont play him. he has score 60 goals in three years at kilmarnock and rangers and he would be amazing for watford I also think you need a central midfielder because you seem to play everything down the wings and not through the middle. I would keep shittu, smith, ellingt
o,otoole, prisbin and demerit and get rid of all the rest.
SEE YOU ALL FOR THE SCUNTHORPE GAME! I always sit in the rookery which is one of the best stands for atmosphere and brilliant comment from the regulars.

Sorry if I have babbled on abit, but I now concider watford my english team infact my second team and I will support them evermore, except henderson unless he has a hair cut and becomes a good player again.

macdoris, that sure is a long trip to watch the Barnsley game. Fair play to you. Not sure I agree with you on Henderson though! He's definately not fat, see goal celebration v Southampton. If that's fat, i'd love to be overweight! Who manages Doncaster? CAn't be bothered to check but they play lovely football. We were rumoured to be after Kris Boyd a couple of seasons ago. He seemed to score every week. Can't see WBA or Stoke slipping up now.

We were fine with our new defencive signings(matt sadler And leigh bromby)and suddenly we lose 3-0 to barnsley and 2-0 to palace. After all those draws. We are also lacking leadership. We've had more captains than ellington and kabba have goals!I think this summer we should get cameron jerome, aaron mclean and henri camera up front. We have got to sell the hopeless ellington and kabba.

I think you are being a bit cruel to macdoris about rebuilding Hadrian's Wall. He is positive and enthusiastic, God knows we've had little enough of that this season. Perhaps he could give the team talk or even play up front, he might be no worse that what we have at the moment.

My mind goes back to our victory at Glanford Park earlier in the season. It seems like a lifetime ago. I thought we played well, looked stronger than them, looked more skillful than them and it was one of the few times I have watched the Horns feeling that no matter how they huffed and puffed against us we would win. No doubt Sage or colin will say I'm wrong and we were rubbish that day, but that's how I remember it. I'll miss Scunthorpe though, nice and close to me so it was the one match where I would spend less time getting to the ground than watching the game! If we don't go up I hope Doncaster or Forest come up.

On the face of it, that makes sense - but then I remembered the last time we bought a player from you bluenoses - Charlie Miller. He could do all of that, but was a complete waste of space, whereas DH has been invaluable!!

Agree with you re Kris Boyd - would be an excellent acquisition as he knows where the back of the net is. But if you think DH is fat
what on earth does that make Boyd? I thought that was why Rangers rarely play him.

Alan Smart was a disappointment, he could and should have achieved more than he did. Never forget the sitter he missed at St James. All he had to do was pass it into the net but he decided to try and be flash and ended up passing it to the keeper.

Remember the great 38,000 at Wembley back in 99? Of course, most of them went missing only a few months after, but that's the nature of 'fans'...

As for Smartie, yes, he should and could have achieved more, but the post was about Scottish players in a yellow shirt. There haven't been many, and he certainly offered more than (Broken) Glass and (Pie-Boy)Miller. And for that split second in the 89th minute back in our first play-off final, I will always rememebr him with fondness.

Nobody has mentioned one of our best Scots, John McClelland. The job he did for us was similar to Malky in his first season.

Do you think now is the time for Aidy to change formation? How about a 3-5-2: Lee, Bromby, Shittu, DeMerit,McAnuff, Smith, O'Toole, Eustace, Stewart, Henderson, Priskin. Subs: Doyley, Sadler, Ellington, Ainsworth, Liam Henderson (who is on fire at the levels he has been playing at). There is no point in being ultra defensive as we need goals and wins. If we qualify for play-offs by drawing we will not have any form behind us and are unlikely to reach the final. It is is s**t or bust time now.

Oh come on Drinker!

It doesn't take long on Google to find your website.

I mean, I have always said I knew the name you posted under originally, and at that time you also posted the name of the town you were from.

Put that information, and certain words relating to the area of business you clearly operate in from things you have said in your posts into Google, and after a while out pops a website.

I thought you'd be flattered that someone would visit your site and have a look around!

You can't have a website and want people not to see it, surely?

Vicar Rage, says...

Drinker

Just to add, you should actually be quite happy with the ranking of your website on Google!

Put your real Christian name, surname and the word 'management' into Google, and you appear on the fourth page.

I'll admit I had to try a few words before I got to 'management' (you know, the ones you'd expect: brilliant, genius, football business expert etc)

Bearing in mind how much the word 'management' appears on the web, I'd be pretty content at being so high up on Google if I were you.

I fail to see how searching on Google is a breach of trust or a misuse of data.

The magic of an internet search is there for all to use.

And as I said, you've been posting under various names for a while now, often agreeing with yourself.

You denied more than once when I suggested I knew who all your various guises were. Yet it was prettye asy because you have a particular style of language, the use of noticeable punctuation (such as double --) etc.

So, all I did was whack the name you used some time ago and the word 'management' into Google and, hey presto, up you popped.

And as you'll note, I have been careful not to give away any names or web addresses. I was merely hoping to prove a point and draw an admission from you.

So, let's get back to just posting under one name each shall we? Then we know no-one is using nom de plumes to agree with their own opinions!

Whilst your explanation is possible I think it unlikely, and that rather,it is the disclosure of my email address that is at the heart of this.

If you are associated with the WO,its group of companies or its ISP,then that would fully explain a number of your statements.

As you have my contact details via the website you mention, why did you not initiate the off-line contact that you suggested?

I suspect it was so that you did not leave a clear footprint.
On that score ,I am today asking my IT consultants to see what can be done to backtrack site visitors.

It could be as you say and that I am paranoid and will owe you an apology,
although it is still an invasion of privacy in my view.

However until I am fully satisfied that an employee has not mis-used their position and breached any reasonable code of conduct,or minor provisions of the DP ACT I will not post further.

I have no desire whatsoever to contact you – I just wanted to see if Sage/Drinker/Lifer were the same person who used to post under their ‘real’ name and home town.

Your responses suggest they are.

If I was going to ‘invade your privacy’ I would have done so by now as I could have called the phone numbers or bombarded the e-mail address on your website. I’m not some silly teenager. You have always taken the high moral/intelligence/e
ducation ground, and all I have attempted to show by doing this little bit of very basic hunting is that there are some people on here as smart as you.

I mean, how can you call looking at a publicly available website an invasion of privacy?

I have used two ISPs – neither of which are connected to the Watford Observer or its group of companies. I don’t work for the Watford Observer or its group of companies.

In fact, it offends me that you suggest any deviance. Can you not simply accept that someone can take the name you use and your regular references to your work in the consultancy/manageme
nt/business world, punch it all into the wonderful worldwide web, and find you?

You chose to use your name, your home town and talk about the work you do on a public forum.

Take that information and put it into a search engine and - quite literally - within 15 to 20 minutes I'd found your website.

That’s all I have done. Anyone could have done the same. You might say I’m sad for bothering – perhaps I am!

But these inferences you make are unfair. I’m not going to make any complaints or demand an apology.

But I’d be happy to accept one, should you offer it, and then we can all move on.

I have enjoyed debating with you, and admire the way you have accepted on-the-field results and decisions are now becoming unacceptable.

There’s a big game on Saturday . . .

given your assurance of no connection with the WO,then my concerns are over.

I have to say that I have already received a prompt response from their Management which like your assurance,I accept.

I am perhaps particularly sensitive, as when using my full name on here in the past my site suffered significant damage including email cloning and disruption to mine & cli
