Hornets
Aidy happy to be on the road
 |
| Aidy Boothroyd |
Aidy Boothroyd admits he is pleased that Sunday's play-off clinching decider at Blackpool is away from.
The Hornets have won just two of their last 16 games at home but have fared much better on their travels, winning ten and drawing eight of their 22 games.
"I shouldn't be but I'm glad the game is away," he said.
"Our home form is a mixture of nerves, expectations from the public, expectations on me and we have appeared apathetic at home and lacked energy. It's something we have to put right in future games."

Ah, so the home performances aren't anything to do with you then Aidy?
It's either the players' fault (nerves, apathy, lack of energy) or the fans (expectations).
Thanks for letting us know where the buck stops.

If he believes there is player apathy then that's a problem only he can deal with.
I think lack of ability to pass and lack of goal threat are clearly missing from the excuses offered up. Things he has worked hard to achieve.

If it hurts you so much, just walk away.

Expectations on the public and on the manager? The only expectation i have as a fan is that someone being paid 5 to £10,000 per week is going to be able to pass the ball, control the ball, run after the ball and make a sterling effort. But something has gone terribly wrong as we seem to be missing even these basic fundementals or effort and skill.

Scotshorn - Fair comment, but if all those who really felt cheated over the past year decided not to come, then you might as well go play the game in cassiobury park, or with the reserves in Borehamwood.
No one, least of all the club, should under estimate the feeling of the main stream fans for being cheated this season. It feels more like we've been relegated than made the play-offs. Like the team, I've got no heart for what happens next, and I've been following WFC since 1974. I'm not enthiused by the play-offs (we dont deserve to be there) and as for promotion, we'd have a worse time than Derby.
The club have really pulled a stroke by calling for early renewal of season tickets, and they wont get away with it again. I sense there's going to be a major clear out from next week, from directors, managers, and players.

Sorry Aidy you have failed to give our side the type of entertainment value to one expected to even get close to any premiership team...
Having had a torrent of abuse over the matter of my past comments on Danny Shitu, that he was our only real threat up front, pity we did not have others like him in side..
I follow NBA also and stats are a big part of of correcting errors made of past games...Hint hint???
But it seems that the pairing of manager and chairman, are dumb and dumber... loyalty yes but stupidity no, clearly us as supporters are taken as fools..
Nothing would be nicer than us going to Wembley and gaining the promotion that we should have secured weeks ago.. But the bottom line is a sacking should have been made at least a month ago, clearly a welcome to the real world call..
is required here.
The brand of football we are playing is far below standard of what the paying public expect...Just go A B please...

Playing away with a more positive supporting band of fans the boys may just surprise us all and win. Interesting to see that Williams was not in tonight's reserve team, and so does this mean that he may be up for selection on Saturday or just that he couldn't take 2 games in a short space of time - even if the first one was just for a first half? Is he the ideal combination with Eustace, he must be the best choice available, surely. I still would like to see somebody up front who is up for it, if Liam scores again tonight then he must be considered.

Yet more clap trap from the clown with the frown...boofer the hoofer.
At no stage in this interview has he managed to truly put his finger on why things have gone so badly wrong...so let me help you boofers.
1. You have willingly let too many of our best players leave...but hey good business eh?
2. You have replaced these players with complete crap...not worthy of the yellow shirt.
3. Your tactics have returned wfc to the dark ages. In truth it is the only way you know because you are so limited...there will never be any change in style.
4. Because of the stubborn insistence on the above, you have lost the players, who are as desperate to see you go now as the majority of the fans.
I'm sick of this talk of promotion when in reality we have experienced our worst run of form for years. We do not deserve to be there and the players know it.
So what will happen on Sunday? A 2-0 defeat and and watford to drop out of the play offs altogether.
The response? More spin from boofers and gimspon, an insistence that this still represents an achievement, blah blah vlah blah...anyone got a large paper bag?

You'd class me as a Happy Clapper; I never have & never will boo a Watford player before, during or after a game. Doesn't mean I'm any happier with the recent style of play, team selection, tactics, decisions, substitutions, effort, skill, passion, etc but I've been brought-up to support the team on & off the pitch. Probably because that's how I was taught to play, captain, coach & manage in a sport I love.
Can the "Miserable Booing" vocal minority (yep - you are the minority, despite what you like to think) like Zip etc please tell us who, what & how you plan to run the Club once you've got rid of the board(s), manager(s), coaching staff, playing staff, etc you don't like.
As my old coach used to say "it's easy to complain but it takes courage to get involved & fix it - especially when your in the crap".
Probably best to remember we have a core support of around 12,000-14,000 (depending on how well we're doing) with 11,000 ST holders with London's Prem & CCC clubs about an hour away so your not likely to need to run a 35,000 seat stadium (good news as we sold-out the Vic a combined FOUR times in TWO Prem seasons).
I'd be really interested to see who you will bring in for what roles, how you will finance it, what your success criteria are, future plans, etc.

How many have we won away from the last 6 away matches? Our tactics are very crude, because the manager says they suit the players he has at his disposal. All bar Doyley, Lee and DeMeritt are players he has brought into the first team squad. I hope we win on sunday, and go on to win promotion through the play offs. If we do, how many potential recruits will look at the way the team plays and fancy joining us? Each summer Boothroyd has been rebuffed by players he has targeted. If we fail to get promotion, I think both financially and in terms of getting back to basics the squad needs refreshing and reducing. There are injured players hopefully to return next August, but many of the fringe players need to go, as the constant changes to the starting 11 have not helped to get results or change outcomes. Time for a big change over the summer regardless of which division we are in.

I agree with WFC & Proud. In addition, and answering others ,whilst I agree at home we are not playing well , it seems to me that it is as much to do with confidence as anything else. We play well away from home , but have been a bag of nerves since Xmas at home. Are you saying that the same players that do well away from home and pick up points , are useless. That doesn't wear with me at all. If any of you boo-ers have ever played a decent level of football ,like me , you will know its all about confidence. Look at Rinaldo , he's full of it so tries fantastic skills which look good. Our guys are frightened to express themselves because you're on their backs straight away boo-ing. When we go a goal down at home it's cheering to raise them that we need, not telling them they're crap. How would you feel /act if whilst you were doing your job of work 10,000 people were boo-ing you and saying you're useless..eventually you'd fall apart.WE have had a bad run , but this league is over 46 matches , and despite everything we are the 5th best team OVERALL this season.Thats not bad ,considering you think everyone is useless.I hope we win on Sunday , in front of the loyal support , and we win the play-offs to shut everyone up. ..and if we don't it still hasn't been a bad season historically for this small club.Whatever happens , this season needs to finish , so that next summer we can re-group and everyone can have some breathing space and look forward to next season. Hopefully , Aidy will still be at the helm as he's still one of the best mangers around .Support your club .

Good call proud.....
I don't remember any of these nerds moaning until
November came along and performance/results went on the decline.
It's easy giving stick out and everyone's got a right to express an opinion but there's no back up to the arguments.
I've sneaked a view of the training the other week and there seems to be a togetherness, a camaraderie between them with no little skill, as far as I could see.
Our home games are certainly a let down but the away performances are great, bar Hull and Leics, doesn't that say something? The so called supporters are playing their part with that.
I don't care whether we're promoted or not, I prefer the CCC to the premiership anyway, more games, less referees against us and not having to endure the likes of Lawrenson and Hanson rubbishing you week in week out.
Come on supporters start supporting the team or buggar off and cheer Man U and alike.
Get a grip!!

Enlightened One - I see; your plan is to sack the manager. No plan to replace him, then?
That leads me (in the absence of any other plans or success criteria) to believe you want us to become the first "people's co-operative" pro football club (Ebbsfleet beat you to the first co-operative club title) run by "The Fans".
Could be interesting to see what happens when you all disagree on who picks the team, who runs the business side, what youth policy you'll implement, who puts the half-time prawn sarnies in the corporate areas, etc.
Me? I'll still be coming along to support the team. Only I doubt it will last very long with no plans....

I agree, thank god we're away. Away from the whingeing, booing, whining, negative boo boys and the select few who sit in the far right corner of the Upper Rous whose only contribution to the match on Saturday was to hurl abuse at Simpson, Stewart, Boothroyd etc. They made no other noise apart from that. As for people who leave as soon as we go 1-0 down, in some ways I hope we don't go up so you walk away for good from the team you probably only started supporting last season anyway.
I still hope we do go up though as surely that's what any real supporter wants, I just fear we'll collect another bunch of hollow, negative whingers if we do.
Ask yourself if you go to a match to support your team or to watch your team win and you should be able to work out whether you're really a Watford fan.
Glad people like gilesy and WFC&Proud are speaking up. The minority that kept getting their negative chants drowned out by positive ones on Saturday seem to take over this site.
We are a laughing stock. Not because we are 5th in the table but because some of our fans who are more on the backs of their own team than the opposition - that's worth a goal in itself to the other team.

Bring in PAUL INCE and send Hoofers to Wrexham. They've got players about as talented as ours.

Agree with a lot of the above and also disagree with a lot of the above. We need a strong second in command who will be allowed an opinion and a coach for the forwards. Then, and only then, will progress be made. However, we are supporters of WFC and at the risk of sounding like a happy clapper, we should support the team. The football has been dire, but as others have posted, the atmosphere at away games is so much better and has been for the last few years. Next season let's have all the games played away from Vicarage Road.

Rosh99 - so your plan is the same as Enlightened's in that "all we need to do is change the manager" but with a name suggested.
I seriously doubt Paul Ince will come to us; MK Dons have made great strides (forgetting what I think about Franchise FC) in recent seasons & have a good all-round platform in place that's sustainable. They've now got a good, young, hungry manager to boot.
Why does that all sound pretty familiar to me? Oh yeah; [italic]SO HAVE WE[/italic] !
Aidy is still one of the best (& most sought after) young managers in the game; I really believe he can turn what has been a poor season in terms of performances (esp at home) into a winning season in terms of promotion. there's also (in my opinion) no real alternative.
It would have been preferable to have gone up automatically playing WBA-style but we didn't. And probably couldn't given the loss of form from both players & then a minority fans at the sharp end of the season.
Our Club has a top youth development system & policy already in place and beginning to produce.

Rest assured Aidy Boothroyd will be doing his utmost to rally the troops and get a win at Blackpool on Sunday. He is a winner and has not given up the fight.
Everyone knows that
Aidy has made mistakes this season after a bright start and confidence of the team is very low indeed; which he is trying to address.
It is sad this site is dominated by negative posters who have unrealistic expectations, limited intelligence and short memories.
We must get behind Aidy & the team and hope he is not driven out of the club before he has the chance to bring us more success.

Richard I agree that many people on this site do not know the meaning of the word support. When we were in the old Div 4 we dreamed of even being in this division.More recently we have endured the Vialli and Lewington eras not to mention Perryman and Bassett!
At least the most passionate fans will be at Blackpool while the glory hunters and moaners are at B&Q.I will be glued to the radio and it will be a change to hear "Yellow Army" instead of the usual boos at home games.A Palace fan I know said he thought their home fans were bad until he heard ours.I am a "clapper" and proud of it and will be raising my half full glass at 4pm to the Golden Boys. KEEP THE FAITH

Its not the loosing that gets the fans backs up, its the lack of effort from the players. If a player on £10,000 per week plus cant do the basics then he should expect some stick and should be big enough to rise above it. Something is obviously wrong behind the scenes when JDM (one of our better players) is on the bench whilst lesser players are on the pitch. The current squad should be good enough but lack leadership. TS GIVES 100% week in week out unlike some of the other over paid superstars.
We now need a performance from the team to give the fans something to cheer about.
As the Southampton Manager said last week "Its up to the team to lift the crowd and not the other way round"
Off to Blackpool see you all there.

I s`pose one should not expect balance from the clearly unbalanced that are all too frequently on here. What?
I include in that desription both the imposter I appear to have stalking me occasionally and zip who thinks that I am not indeed myself(Forstescue-Sm
yth if you must know)
We have one game of this season left if unsuccessful on Sunday(I shall be in attendance, unlike many of the most vehement posters) and will be giving it my usual "ra-ra watford, come on you yellow fellows!" to inspire the apparently uninspired,
uninterested and leaderless bunch that our manager calls a team.
If we get into the playoffs then one hopes that lessons are learned and improvements made,if we do not then young Aidrian should resign, but there are no grounds to dismiss him and those who call for such action demonstrate their legal and financial ignorance.
If we do not get promotion then the board needds to appoint a football overseer of some sort.
Clearly the manager has lost the plot, but it is a poor league with mostly very ordinary teams in the playoffs and we have some chance of going through still.
Next season will be far harder to achieve promotion and I think it entirely possible that the board may sell, but I am not certain that is going to be a good thing at all.
Of course the demented posters will be critical if we do or do not go up,if we do or do not get sold and if we do or do not do anything at all.

Good luck to the boys on Sunday. I think Blackpool will come at us from the start so hopefully we should be able to pick them off on the break with a front 6 of Ainsworth, Eustace, Williams, Smith, McAnuff and Hendo (in my opinion - not sure whether Aidy will agree). All the best to you guys that are making the trip on Sunday, I'm sure the atmosphere will be terrific and the lads will do the business. Come on you horns!!!

If we are crap at home because of the fans. We must be great away? ummm
Wonder why we haven't won away from home for nearly 3 months then?
When players start blaming the manager and he then blames the fans you do have to wonder what future he now has

Confidence is an elusive thing which can return as quick as it leaves. Sunday is the last chance saloon, if they can get something then just maybe we can make it.
If not then someone has to be held accountable. Boothroyd should stay either way and sort this mess out. He should also take a good look at himself. If he doesn't change then his arrogance will be our downfall.

Ive got a question for all of you experts who post on here. I went to see the reserves last night and sometimes watch the U18s. Why do both teams play a different style of football to the first team? I'm only a fan and do not have the extensive knowledge of some of you on here, but it would seem to make some sort of sense to have all 3 sides playing the same way, thus making progression from one team to the next a little bit easier. Any ideas?

Whatever the outcome of this season, then it is obvious that Simpson (if he is still in charge) needs to do a full inquest on this campaign over the Summer. Why did a promising start (in terms of results and hopeful looking transfers) go so badly wrong? Results speak for themselves and a run of 12 matches with only one win is not something any manager can ignore or excuse. Boothroyd does have to be held to account, though in the end may be given another season to deliver. In my opinion his fault has been the failure adequately to replace the key players from the promotion winning side, namely Young Foster King, Spring and Mahon. He made transfer misjudgements because of his stubborn belief that he could "turn around" players whose career had hit the buffers. Subsequently, despite his claims to believe in "learning" and in constantly "striving to improve" he seems to have stopped taking advice, and he and the team have gone backwards. He needs to rediscover his original philosophy and vision, and to re-energise himself and the team. Can he doe this at Watford? Should he be given the chance?

Get behind the boys on Sunday. We all want to go up, regardless of what we think of the team. The football (or lack of) we are playing at present is up there with the worst i can remember. However the time for inquests is after the season, not leading into one of the biggest games of the season. If we fail tor each the top six then questions must be asked, and hopefully answered by those in charge. Boothroyd is clearly in desperate trouble, having to resort to blaming the fans for his teams poor performance, however we should be behind the lot of them on Sunday.

I'm still confused as to where people are saying Aidy has "blamed" anyone for the current poor from. The way I read his statements is that he understands our expectations, wants to exceed them but can't & won't make excuses when that fails to happen.
Comments like Vicar Rage's 1st post are based on his interpretation of the statement which are different to mine. I think Aidy's comments are "positive re-inforcement" of what he, the players & Club in general want to achieve and I reckon his private comments when none of the media or us are in 'earshot' are more likely to be very direct & in a "let's get this sorted now" vein.

Dave - I seem to recollect statements from Aidy, the coaching staff and board our younger teams were to play in a different style to the 1st team to ensure a supply of talent that would allow that style to be played in the 1st team. As with all things related to player, team & style development, it takes virtues like time, patience & luck to achieve.
From what I've seen & read, I think our youth policy is showing good results, is among the best in the country and on a par with WBA, Leeds, Norwich, etc for a very simple reason: the same bloke that influenced theirs is here at Watford....
Sadly, the results may not be fully delivered to 'save' Aidy from the vocal minority who want him gone after (admittedly) no success in changing the 1st team style of play this season.
In fairness to Aidy though, this season would have been his first chance to change style & integrate his signings (too soon for majority of the youth team) given his priority on being made manager in 2005 was saving us from League 1, then getting the same squad to the play-offs & promotion to the Prem (where I think Aidy was level with GT's 1999/2000 season).
Hopefully, he'll stick around to finish the job.

Oh - thanks for explaining it WFC & Proud - we were getting confused last night when the ball kept getting played on the green stuff. Interestingly some on this site have been suggesting Henderson (Liam that is) and Young should be put in the first team. Probably best if they are not, given that the style would be different to what they have been playing for the best part of this season.

I have supported this club since about 1967. Obviously I haven't seen any games this season living in a far away land, but there are a few things that have struck me over this season. Many people, not just the boo types are unhappy with the performances this season. Losing is one thing but losing and not being entertained - for very long periods, is very much another. I do not think that the plot has been lost all season, certainly after the WBA defeat that touched a nerve, but specifically since the Stoke game things have changed. That day they played superbly and were unlucky, that was not a long time ago. Something happened since then, something very bad and I do not have a clue what it was. However, as a fan I will always wish the best for the club and I hope that we not only make the playoffs but go on and win them. There has been so much negativity lately, even I have become more dissolutioned but at the end of it all, this club, our club is what matters. Like all things in life that we genuinely love, we tend to become so much more emotional, for better or worse and our criticism becomes so much more personal, passionate. Anyway, I do not want Adie to go, at this time I feel for him as a person, as a human being, having thousands of fans shouting abuse must be so tough, for players and staff alike, deserved or not, that must knock a fair bit of belief out of you. To all of those good enough to be going to Blackpool, I wish you all a great and hopefully succesful day out. To all of those fortunate enough to put on a shirt, remember that the many outway the few, though the few have had good reason to show their feelings. Like me, as players you are paid to do a job. I would ask that on Sunday you try and earn some of the respect you have clearly lost, and make those loyal travellers remember the ability that does exist within this team. Good luck.

Good luck.

Any ideas?[/quote] Dave....
I wrote down all my thoughts to your question, then just as I was about to hit the button I noticed WFC & Proud comment and it was word for word, so I cancelled it!!!
I hope that helps?

VoR - perhaps not so much great minds thinking alike as those with an understanding it takes time to build a good legacy but next to no time to destroy one in football.
You certainly can't buy an instant legacy - look at Chelski; achieved a side capable of reaching the Champions League final after several seasons through buying, replacing & then gelling the right group of players.

Since young mr johnson has gone back to boro, its fair to say we have struggled...
I don,t think its as big a problem as all the boo boy tw*ts will have us think...
WE NEED SCARY PLAYERS
The horns have ALWAYS had 1 or 2 of what i call scary players, your callaghans, youngs,ba
rnes, the list is endless but you know what i mean..
These players we had would always make the other, more mediocre players raise ntheir games, and its that, that we are lacking....
We used to be able to keep these lads, cos they were watford through and through...
Nowadays any half decent player that shows up in the lower leagues is snapped up via,an offer that can,t be refused, and so are not left long enough to grace the championship..
Get some scary players to stay with us for a season,is nigh on impossible,as clubs like ours, get massive offers for them and sell...
Forget profits for a while and keep a settled squad, and your scary ones, like we used to,and roberts your aunties brother..
Draw sunday

VoR - in my opinion, we should never have let Vialli nhave any time. Great players don't necessarily make great managers and Vialli hadn't even played at the level he cut his teeth as a manager with us, didn't understand the finances, what was required to "dig out" results and was the wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time.
He's not exactly gone on to set the world of management alight since. At least Aidy knew what was required, had (has?) a sustainable plan and the motivational skills to carry it through.
